DIY wind power - DIY Wind Turbine - Ready Low Voltage Disconnect and Charge Controller
I managed to build the charge controller (to check the charging process), the Low Voltage Disconnect (to check the discharge process), and encase them so that it looks good. Wiring everything, so that it doesn't burn when it is ON, was a challenge by itself. By the way, both charge controller and LVD are using the same board made my Glen. The calibration process is a little bit akward for the LVD but once you have everything set, it works just great. The 4 batteries (12V 7Ah) terminals are connected in parallel with the same cable lenght. I read somewhere on the web that it was the best configuration to have a well balanced charge and discharge process as far as batteries voltage are concerned. The next step is to improve my wind turbine. It should be able to keep the batteries charged enough to run the inverter at the same time. After that I would get good batteries and test everything together.

Thirteen weeks into the project, the students in Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Mach 282 were given a task — design and build a wind turbine. A few students knew welding. Some had an electrical background. One or two understood the computer-aided design software. On May 3, 2010, the last day of class, the class members gathered to erect the turbine, a sleek vertical helix, that they design, engineered and built. The students have not become master electricians or draftsmen, but they have learned the skills needed to take a design from concept to construction. The students have high hopes for wind energy. "I think Michigan needs to take the initiative or lead if you will in manufacturing renewable energy," says student Zach Deming. "We have all the facilities basically already from the automotive industry. People are looking and willing to do the jobs. It's real close." While much of education today focuses on philosophical and theoretical discussions, an experimental class at Kalamazoo Valley Community College has been focusing on the hands-on processes involved in manufacturing, from design to fabrication. From January to May, Kalamazoo Gazette photographer Mark Bugnaski documented the class as it went from design to installation of its innovative wind turbine on the KVCC's Texas Township campus. Mach 282 — short for the Machine 282 class — was experimental not only in its unique structure, which allowed students to design and create a product in 13-week class, but also in its focus: wind turbines, which tie into the college's innovative Wind Energy Technology certificate program to train workers to install, maintain and service wind turbines. An Israeli company, Innowattech Ltd., in cooperation with Israel National Roads Company, has recently tested the IPEG™ (Innowattech Piezoelectric Generator) system in the first of its kind pilot project along a ten-meter stretch of highway in Israel. The technology developed by Innowattech in association with Technion IIT (Israel Institute of Technology) is based on piezoelectric materials that enable conversion of mechanical energy exerted by the weight of passing vehicles into electrical energy. One kilometer of Innowattech's generators along a single lane is capable of producing an average of 200 KWh per hour, sufficient electricity to provide for the average consumption in 200-300 households provided approximately 600 heavy trucks or buses travel through the interval per hour on average. The harvested electricity may be supplied to various road-side applications, such as traffic lights, billboards, enforcement cameras, signs, etc., as well as transferred into the electric grid. The technology may also be used for road data collection (Smart Road). The technology does not increase the vehicles' fuel intake or affect the road infrastructure. It is not affected by weather conditions and allows electricity to be harvested near the end consumer. backyard wind generator - trying to build a vertical axis wind turbine. part 1
My version of the 55 gallon drum Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. Savonius? I am using two bearings with a flange which holds 4 carriage bolts mounted on a frame made of 2x4s. The inside diameter of the bearings are 1". I am also going to try a 10" diameter pulley to connect a belt drive to the generator(dc motor). I just got it mocked up for the first time today. I have the motor, rectifiers, and capacitors ready to install. If it produces 12 volts in a moderate wind then I will try connecting it to my solar/wind charge controller and a battery bank for a small off grid system. The bearings also have a grease fitting. The man at San Antonio Belting and Pulley Co. was very helpful. It spins freely but it takes two small oscillating fans on high to maintain about 20 rpm. If I set the fans on medium it will spin but much slower and it eventually stops altogether if I put the fans on the lowest setting. No, it won't fit out the door. I have to remove one set of barrel halves and the temporary braces before I can remove it from my living room. The motor I am using as a generator weighs 25 pounds. I am going to mount it at the top of the frame and put a cover over the top to protect it from the elements. I ordered another motor/generator which weighs 40 pounds which I may try to see if it will produce more power. It would be easy to connect two generators to the shaft but I don't know if the turbine will be powerful enough to spin them both. I probably should have looked for <b>...</b>
